10 Facts About Playa El Ermitaño
Playa El Ermitaño is considered one of the most hidden and untouched beaches in the Samaná Peninsula.
The beach is only accessible by boat or through a jungle hiking trail, which helps preserve its natural beauty and keeps crowds away.
Playa El Ermitaño is located between Las Terrenas, El Limón, and Las Galeras on the northeast coast of Samaná.
The name “Ermitaño” comes from the Spanish word for “hermit,” inspired by the beach’s isolated and peaceful atmosphere.
According to local legends, a French pirate supposedly lived in isolation in the area for more than 20 years during the 18th century, which influenced the beach’s name.
The beach is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise water and white or golden sand surrounded by tropical jungle and coconut trees.
Snorkeling is one of the main activities there because nearby reefs and rocky formations are home to colorful marine life.
Some boat tours to Playa El Ermitaño include stops at Cayo La Caña, a volcanic rock formation known for snorkeling.
Unlike many beaches in the Dominican Republic, Playa El Ermitaño has almost no commercial development — no big hotels, loud bars, or crowded resorts directly on the beach.
Many travelers describe the journey to Playa El Ermitaño as part of the adventure itself, whether arriving by small boat across the coast or hiking through tropical forest trails and cliffs.

Histories
There is an old and little-known legend in Samaná that says Playa El Ermitaño was not only named because of its isolation, but also after a French pirate known as Juan “The Hermit,” who supposedly abandoned piracy and hid along this coast around 1780. According to the story, he lived completely alone for more than 20 years between the jungle and the sea, surviving on fishing, tropical fruits, and fresh spring water.
The most mysterious part of the legend says that local fishermen still talk about a small cave that only becomes visible during low tide. It is believed that Juan hid a treasure of gold and stolen jewels there from his pirate days. Nothing was ever officially discovered, but for generations many people in Samaná avoided the area at night because they believed the old pirate’s spirit still protected the treasure.
Even today, some local guides claim that during very calm days, you can still notice unusual stone formations near the shore that were supposedly part of the small shelter where “The Hermit” once lived.
